What Did We Learn From Spurs First Game
With the new Premier League season up and running, we have already seen glimpses of what to expect from Spurs in the coming season. It was not a perfect match, but there are still positives to look forward to and a few concerns
Fitness is Paramount
With Yves Bissouma already suspended by Spurs for his pre-season antics, Spurs started the season with a weaker squad. Additionally, Porro’s withdrawal during the game means Spurs are already looking paper-thin in the squad depth department.
Ange Postecoglou will be keen to avoid more injuries in the upcoming few weeks. It’s just been one game, and Spurs have already suffered an injury, albeit not a long-term one. Still, Ange and Spurs will be looking to put down a marker early in the season, and they will need the help of every single player for that. Not to mention, Porro was the sole goalscorer for Spurs in their opening-day draw against Leicester.
Solanke Needs Patience
Patience is key when it comes to Dominic Solanke. There were enough signs during the game against Leicester to suggest he will be a key and influential player going forward. He even could’ve grabbed himself a couple of goals on any other day. But, considering it was his debut match and also representing a top-six club, it was understandable that he was a bit nervous.
The potential is definitely there for Solanke to succeed at Spurs. What he needs is some patience from the fans and the management.
Ange Has Work To Do
The image of Ange Postecoglou bent down, grabbing his knees in exasperation, has already become a meme on social media. Spurs should have won this game with the chances they created and how dominant they were in the first half. Ange knows that too, and hence that reaction from him.
Spurs let Leicester back into the game in the second half. They encouraged Leicester, and that in turn woke up the fans in the King Power Stadium. Spurs did everything right in the first half, but everything was wrong in the second half. The same defensive frailties from last season crept in. A 37-year-old Vardy managed to get the equalizer and then even riled up the away fans with his antics after getting substituted. Spurs were knackered in the second half and that shouldn’t have happened considering how good and organised they were in the first half.
Ange still has a lot of work to do with his squad. He has already said that he generally wins something in his second season at the clubs he has managed, which is a pretty huge thing to say considering Spurs’ drought in recent years. It is time to show the world that it is not just all words.
