Will Ange Postecoglous’s “I always win things in my second year” Quip Hurt Spurs This Season?

Look, we all know Ange didn’t mean it that way, and after the Coventry game in the League Cup, Ange did clarify that the statement he made was just a fact that he stated, which is absolutely right. It is an actual fact that Postecoglou has always won trophies in his second year at the clubs he has been in.

Just ask Celtic and Yokohama Marinos, and they will say the same thing. Ange wins stuff in his second season. But this is England; the league is different, and the press is definitely different. The press has mastered the dark arts of twisting statements to garner views. Ange has fallen for that trick, too.

While no one expects Spurs to win the League title or a Champions League in a year or two, there’s always the potential for a surprise. Everyone knows that it takes time to build a squad before you think of winning the big titles. What this statement did was put unnecessary pressure on the Spurs squad. Now, they will be expected to win at least one of the domestic titles this season.

You must understand that the least Spurs can do this season is go on a good cup run. It was expected from them even before the season began. Ange’s statement didn’t have to be made because it was quietly implied; it just added much more burden on Ange to deliver.

If Ange goes trophyless this season, the downside is that media houses will write scathing articles about how he said he would win a trophy, and Spurs failed to win one yet again. He has put his job in danger with this statement.

The squad is still taking shape under Ange Postecoglou; gaps still need to be plugged and addressed. The board at Tottenham Hotspur also needs to realize that, either now or in the future, they must show patience with at least one of their managers even if they do not win a trophy or two in their first couple of seasons. Pochettino came spectacularly close to ending the trophy drought with the biggest club trophy in European Football, but even he needed time to shape his squad into a world-class one.

The final verdict is that Ange Postecoglou has shown much promise in his time at Spurs. He needs proper backing to succeed, but he must also dial down his “pal” nature with the media because one of these statements might just be the end of him at Spurs.
